Lantern House, Hillsborough, NC
A small house can contain plenty of drama and interest.
A small house, with lots of drama, Tryon St. floats off multiple cantilevers over the ravine.
Custom designed shelving for the owner to display special paintings and pottery.

Lanterns have always inspired us.
Small houses in tidy neighborhoods with glowing windows remind us of lanterns, which inspired this house.
This tight little site in the Hillsborough Historic district appeared very innocent, but was full of constraints! Creek setback, wonderful trees to save, Historic district designation and an odd shape inside the setback. (That's ok - we love a difficult site!)
We are also a flat roof house that was proposed for the historic district! In former years it would have been a big no go. But the new historic district commissioners believe that houses can reflect their times and don't have to be colonial pastiche. Bravo! One of the commissioners actually complimented us and said this house would be a future historic house! Huge thanks to the Hillsborough Historic Commission!
The Client is an accomplished artist with a large collection of art to display including a gorgeous collection of North Carolina pottery. They requested a small house with two bedrooms, one to serve as a studio space when guests are not there.
Stay tuned for more pics as construction continues. Buildsense is the GC on this project.
